Staatskapelle Berlin
The Staatskapelle Berlin is one of the oldest orchestras in the world, with its origins tracing back to 1570 when it was established by Joachim II Hector, Elector of Brandenburg. Originally performing exclusively for the court, the orchestra expanded its role when Frederick the Great founded the Royal Court Opera in 1742, merging it with the orchestra. Over the centuries, it has been associated with renowned musicians such as Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Richard Strauss, among others. The Staatskapelle Berlin became known for its exceptional, dark, and warm sound, a result of its long-standing tradition and the influence of famous conductors. The orchestra has been involved in numerous premieres and is a vital part of the Berlin State Opera, performing major symphonic works and chamber music. Daniel Barenboim served as its general music director from 1992 until his resignation in 2023, after which Christian Thielemann was appointed to the position, effective September 2024.
