Quintette Hot Club de France
The Quintette du Hot Club de France, formed in 1934 in Paris, France, was a pioneering jazz ensemble known for its distinctive style that fused swing with gypsy music, often referred to as "gypsy jazz" or "jazz manouche." The group was founded by the legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli, alongside bassist Louis Vola and rhythm guitarists Roger Chaput and Joseph Reinhardt, Django's brother.

The ensemble emerged from informal jam sessions at the Hotel Claridge in Paris, where Reinhardt and Grappelli were performing as part of a band led by Vola. Encouraged by concert promoters Pierre Nourry and Charles Delaunay, the group officially formed and began recording in 1934. Their early recordings were released under various names, including "Delaunay's Jazz" and "Django Reinhardt et le Quintette du Hot Club de France, avec Stéphane Grappelly."

The Quintette's music was characterized by its infectious rhythms, intricate improvisations, and the unique interplay between Reinhardt's virtuosic guitar playing and Grappelli's expressive violin. Their repertoire included a mix of original compositions and jazz standards, infused with traditional gypsy music elements.

The group gained significant popularity in Europe, particularly in the UK, and recorded over 130 titles for labels such as Decca, Swing, HMV, Ultraphone, and Odeon. They performed at numerous concerts and festivals, collaborating with esteemed musicians like Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins.

The outbreak of World War II in 1939 disrupted the Quintette's activities. While on tour in England, Reinhardt returned to France, and Grappelli remained in the UK. During the war, Reinhardt continued to perform under the Quintette name with different lineups.

Despite the challenges posed by the war and subsequent lineup changes, the Quintette du Hot Club de France left an indelible mark on jazz history. Their innovative style and exceptional musicianship continue to inspire musicians worldwide, and their recordings remain cherished classics in the jazz genre.
