Patrick Leonard
Patrick Leonard, born Patrick Ray Leonard on March 14, 1956, in Crystal Falls, Michigan, is an esteemed American songwriter, keyboardist, film composer, and music producer. He is most renowned for his extensive collaboration with pop icon Madonna, contributing to her albums such as "True Blue" (1986), "Who's That Girl" (1987), "Like a Prayer" (1989), "I'm Breathless" (1990), and "Ray of Light" (1998). Leonard also played keyboards at Live Aid in 1985 and served as musical director and keyboardist for Madonna's The Virgin Tour (1985) and the Who's That Girl World Tour (1987).
Beyond his work with Madonna, Leonard has collaborated with a wide array of artists, including Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Elton John, Leonard Cohen, Bryan Ferry, Julian Lennon, Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Beck, Bryan Adams, Peter Cetera, Jewel, Blue October, Duncan Sheik, Michael W. Smith, Marianne Faithfull, and Robbie Robertson. He was part of the art-pop groups Toy Matinee and Third Matinee.
Leonard's collaboration with Leonard Cohen is particularly noteworthy, having co-written and produced albums such as "Old Ideas" (2012), "Popular Problems" (2014), and "You Want It Darker" (2016). His song "Nevermind" from "Popular Problems" was featured in HBO's "True Detective."
In 1997, Leonard released an instrumental album titled "Rivers" through his label Unitone, and in 2024, he released the double album "It All Comes Down to Mood" on Ruudy 6 Recordings. His early career included playing with the band Whisper, later renamed Trillion, and a brief stint with the Allman Brothers Band in 1980. He also served as musical director and lead keyboardist for the Jacksons' Victory Tour in 1984.
Patrick Leonard married Icelandic singer-songwriter Anna Mjöll in 2018 and has three children. His daughter Jessica inspired Madonna's song "Dear Jessie," while his son Sean is a musician, and his other son Jordan is a projection mapper and VJ known as Pickels Visuals. Leonard's influences include classic rock and progressive rock bands like Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Jethro Tull.
