Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir
The Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra (ANPO) is a prestigious orchestra based in Yerevan, Armenia, and is recognized as one of the leading orchestras of the former Soviet Union. Established in 1925 by Arshak Adamian and Alexander Spendiaryan, it serves as the national center for professional orchestral music in Armenia. The orchestra performs at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, a renowned venue in Yerevan designed by Alexander Tamanian.
Throughout its history, the ANPO has been led by numerous distinguished conductors, including Arshak Adamian, Alexander Spendiaryan, Valery Gergiev, and Eduard Topchjan, who has been the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor since 2000. The orchestra has performed a vast array of classical repertoire and has collaborated with many of the world's leading artists, such as David Oistrach, Sviatoslav Richter, and Placido Domingo.
The ANPO is committed to promoting cultural and musical awareness, regularly performing both classical and contemporary music. It also serves as an ambassador of Armenian music worldwide, having toured extensively across the USA, Europe, and Asia. The orchestra has released over 30 CDs and continues to support the performance of new orchestral works.
In recent years, the ANPO has celebrated significant anniversaries, including a world tour in 2023 dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. The orchestra continues to maintain its reputation for excellence and cultural contribution both in Armenia and internationally.
