James Sherman
James Benjamin Sherman, born on August 17, 1908, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was a prominent American jazz pianist and arranger. His career began in the late 1920s, playing in dance bands and collaborating with Jimmy Gorham in the Philadelphia area. In 1930, Sherman joined Alphonso Trent's band, performing on a steamboat, and throughout the 1930s, he played with notable musicians such as Peanuts Holland, Al Sears, Stuff Smith, Lil Armstrong, Putney Dandridge, Mildred Bailey, and Billie Holiday. In 1938, he became the pianist and arranger for The Charioteers, remaining with them until 1952. Afterward, he focused on local performances in eastern Pennsylvania. From 1960 until shortly before his death on October 11, 1975, Sherman held a residency at Miss Jeanne's Crossroad Tavern in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He is also recognized for co-writing the jazz standard "Lover Man."
