Johnny Richards
Johnny Richards, born Juan Manuel Cascales on November 2, 1911, in Querétaro, Mexico, was a renowned American jazz arranger and composer. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1919, settling first in Los Angeles and later in San Fernando, California. Richards was a child prodigy, proficient in trumpet, violin, and banjo by age ten, and later added saxophone to his repertoire. He studied arranging at Syracuse University and began his career writing film music in Hollywood under the mentorship of Victor Young at Paramount.

Richards was known for his progressive and adventurous arrangements, particularly with Stan Kenton's big band during the 1950s and early 1960s. His notable works with Kenton include "Cuban Fire!" and "Kenton's West Side Story." He also led his own bands and composed the music for the popular song "Young at Heart," famously performed by Frank Sinatra.

Throughout his career, Richards was praised for his bold, orchestral compositions and his ability to blend jazz with classical elements, often incorporating Latin rhythms and dissonance. Despite facing challenges with commercial success, his contributions to jazz were significant, characterized by fervor and tenacity.

Johnny Richards passed away on October 7, 1968, in New York City due to a brain tumor, leaving behind a legacy of innovative jazz compositions and arrangements.
