Dick Penner
Allen Richard "Dick" Penner, born in 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, was an influential figure in the rockabilly music scene, known primarily for co-writing the classic hit "Ooby Dooby" with Wade Lee Moore. This song became a significant rockabilly hit when recorded by Roy Orbison. Penner's early musical career began after he moved to Texas, where he was exposed to country music and began playing guitar at the age of 16.

In 1954, Penner enrolled at North Texas State University, where he met Wade Moore. Together, they formed a musical duo known as "Wade & Dick—The College Kids" and recorded for Sun Records in 1957. They recorded six songs, including "Wild Woman" and "Bop Bop Baby," with a youthful and edgy style aimed at the teen market. Penner also recorded solo tracks such as "Move Baby Move," "Fine Little Baby," and "Cindy Lou," though none achieved the commercial success of "Ooby Dooby."

Despite his early foray into music, Penner eventually pursued an academic career, earning a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and becoming a professor of English at the University of Tennessee, where he taught for 32 years until his retirement in 1990. He authored three academic books, with "Fiction of the Absurd" being his favorite. Dick Penner passed away on September 24, 2024, following a heart attack.
