Piero Cassano
Piero Cassano, born on September 13, 1948, in Genoa, Italy, is a renowned Italian musician, composer, and singer. He is best known as a founding member of the Genoan band Matia Bazar. Cassano's musical journey began with the progressive rock band JET, which he formed in 1971 alongside Aldo Stellita and Carlo Marrale. Although JET's participation in the 1973 Sanremo Music Festival with the song "Anika na-o" was not successful, it set the stage for future achievements.
In 1975, Cassano, along with vocalist Antonella Ruggiero and drummer Giancarlo Golzi, transformed JET into Matia Bazar. Over the next six years, Cassano composed several hits for the band, including "Stasera...che sera!" and "Solo tu." The band won the Sanremo Music Festival in 1978 with "...e dirsi ciao" and represented Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979 with "Raggio di luna." Cassano left Matia Bazar in 1981 to explore other musical endeavors.
As a composer and producer, Cassano collaborated with lyricist Adelio Cogliati, significantly contributing to the career of Eros Ramazzotti by writing hits such as "Una storia importante" and "Cose della vita." He also worked with artists like Anna Oxa, Mina, and Milva, and composed Italian openings for popular anime, including "Sailor Moon."
Cassano rejoined Matia Bazar in 2000, participating in multiple Sanremo Music Festivals and winning in 2002 with "Messaggio d'amore." He remained with the band until 2017, after which he departed following a hiatus due to the death of bandmate Giancarlo Golzi. Throughout his career, Cassano has been a pivotal figure in the Italian music scene, known for his contributions to both pop and rock genres.
