While in college, Zanetti formed a band called Taxi with Zucchero Fornaciari, releasing a local hit single "To Miami" in 1983.

Zanetti's breakthrough came with the production of G.A.N.G.'s "Incantation" and his own hit "Don't Cry Tonight" under the name Savage. From 1984 to 1986, he released successful singles and the album Tonight, gaining popularity in Europe, particularly in Eastern European countries.
