Bechou Moktar
Moktar Sharouny, known professionally as Moktar, is an Australian-Egyptian DJ and producer renowned for his unique fusion of club and techno music with traditional Arabic instrumentation. Born in Cairo and raised in the Sutherland Shire of Sydney, Australia, Moktar grew up in a musically rich environment, heavily influenced by his father, Emad el Sharouny, a renowned Egyptian orchestral conductor and composer. This upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for music and a desire to create sounds that resonate with his dual heritage.

Moktar's music career began after a period of playing guitar in a chillwave duo, but he found his true calling in the broken beats of UK dance music, inspired by hybrid acts like Mount Kimbie. His debut EP, released under Mall Grab’s Steel City Dance Discs in 2021, showcased his distinctive style by blending broken techno, house, and electro with traditional Arabic sounds. The single "Silk" from this EP became a hit, reaching the No.1 spot on community radio in his hometown.

Moktar's work is characterized by its narrative nature, weaving together Arabic folk percussion with modern dancefloor elements. His compositions reflect his experiences as part of the diaspora, exploring themes of identity and heritage. Moktar has performed at renowned venues such as Club 77 and has cultivated a following in Europe with tours across major cities like London, Berlin, and Paris.

Currently based in Melbourne, Moktar continues to develop his sound, aiming to incorporate more live elements into his performances, drawing from his background in live music and his father's influence. With aspirations for a debut album, Moktar is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of his music, constantly evolving and embracing his multicultural roots.
