John Kander
John Harold Kander, born on March 18, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri, is an esteemed American composer known primarily for his contributions to musical theater. He is best recognized as one half of the songwriting duo Kander and Ebb, alongside lyricist Fred Ebb. Together, they created scores for 15 musicals, including the iconic "Cabaret" (1966) and "Chicago" (1975), both of which were later adapted into successful films. The pair also wrote the classic song "New York, New York." Kander and Ebb's work garnered numerous accolades, including eleven Tony Award nominations, of which they won four, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award for Kander. They also received two Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe nominations.

Kander's early interest in music was nurtured by his family's love of singing around the piano, and he wrote his first composition, a Christmas carol, at a young age. He pursued formal education in music, earning a degree from Oberlin College in 1951 and a master's degree from Columbia University in 1953. His career began in earnest as a rehearsal pianist for "West Side Story," where he met influential figures like choreographer Jerome Robbins.

Throughout his career, Kander's work has been celebrated for its storytelling through music, a passion that was kindled by early experiences with opera. He has remained active in the industry for decades, continuing to influence the world of musical theater. Kander married Albert Stephenson in 2010 and remains a prominent figure in the arts.
