Carroll Coates
Carroll Coates (23 September 1929 – 21 October 2023) was a British-American songwriter, composer, and lyricist renowned for his contributions to music from the 1950s to the 1990s. Born in Uxbridge, England, Coates made a significant impact in the music industry with his songs recorded by legendary artists such as Frank Sinatra, Carmen McRae, Tony Bennett, Shirley Horn, Mel Tormé, and Nancy Wilson. His jazz ballad "You'll See" became a popular choice among many artists. Coates also wrote music for films, with notable works including the Golden Globe-nominated theme for "Sunday in New York."
In addition to his commercial success, Coates composed a heartfelt tribute to Sarah Vaughan titled "Sarah" following her death in 1990. The song was performed by the Shirley Horn Trio at a tribute concert in 1991. Coates was honored in 1996 at a concert in Larkspur, California, where he introduced vocalists performing his songs.
Throughout his career, Coates's work spanned both recordings and film soundtracks, contributing lyrics and compositions to various projects. He passed away at his home in Carmel, California, at the age of 94.
