Clifton Davis
Clifton Duncan Davis, born on October 4, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, is a distinguished American actor, singer, songwriter, minister, and author. Raised in Mastic, New York, he is the son of Thelma van Putten Langhorn, a nurse, and Toussaint L'Ouverture Davis, a Seventh-day Adventist minister. Davis's early education was at Pine Forge Academy, a Black boarding school, and he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from Oakwood University and a Master of Divinity from Andrews University.
Davis's career began in the 1960s as a songwriter, notably penning The Jackson 5's hit "Never Can Say Goodbye." He made his Broadway debut in Hello, Dolly! and was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in Two Gentlemen of Verona. His television career includes starring roles in "That's My Mama" and "Amen," where he became widely recognized for his portrayal of Reverend Rueben Gregory. He also appeared in "Madam Secretary" and hosted various gospel music specials.
In addition to his entertainment career, Davis is a licensed minister with an interdenominational ministry spanning over 35 years. He has been a frequent guest on the Trinity Broadcasting Network and has received multiple honorary doctorates for his contributions to social, civic, and spiritual service. Despite facing personal challenges, including overcoming substance abuse, Davis has remained a prominent and inspiring figure in both the entertainment industry and his spiritual endeavors.
