Darcy Maravilha
Darcy Maravilha, born Darci Souto Amorim da Cruz on October 15, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, is a renowned Brazilian composer, musician, percussionist, and singer. Raised in the suburb of Irajá, he began his musical journey in the 1970s as part of the Ala de Compositores of the Bloco Carnavalesco Boêmios de Irajá. He later joined the Ala de Compositores of several prestigious samba schools, including Portela, Caprichosos de Pilares, and Império Serrano.
In the 1980s, Darcy was part of the Grupo Chega de Choro and contributed as a percussionist in various shows and recordings with major Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) artists. He played a significant role in the samba community, having his sambas-enredos performed nine times by Portela at the carnival. Notably, in 1980, Império Serrano featured his samba-enredo, and he was invited to record and perform it alongside Roberto Ribeiro.
Darcy Maravilha's compositions have been celebrated in various samba competitions, including a victory with Caprichosos de Pilares in 1997. He also achieved success with Portela, winning the Estandarte de Ouro for best samba-enredo in 1998 and 1999. Beyond carnival, his work has been recorded by artists such as Jair Rodrigues, Alcione, and Beth Carvalho.
In 2010, he independently released his solo album "Darcy Maravilha, a cara do samba." His contributions to samba have been recognized in festivals like the Festival de Samba de Raiz e Terreiro in 2019, where he won first place with his samba "Dor do passado." Darcy Maravilha remains a respected figure in the samba world, known for his dedication to the genre and his collaborations with both seasoned and emerging artists.
