Martinho d'Assuncao
Martinho d'Assunção, born on April 12, 1914, in the parish of Santos-o-Velho, Lisbon, was a distinguished Portuguese musician renowned for his contributions to Fado music. The son of a poet, he discovered his passion for music early, mastering the guitar, mandolin, and violin during his childhood. By 1927, he had already showcased his exceptional guitar skills at the Politeama concert, "Guitarra de Portugal."

His career began with a performance alongside the guitarist Armandinho in 1924. Under the tutelage of João da Mata Gonçalves, Martinho honed his musical expertise. He quickly gained recognition, performing nationally and internationally. Tours in 1932 took him to Madeira and the Azores, and in 1933, he toured Angola, Mozambique, and ex-Rhodesia, performing with the "Grupo Artístico de Fados."

Throughout his career, Martinho played at numerous Fado venues, including "Salão Jansen," "Casablanca," and "Faia." He collaborated with various ensembles, such as the "Conjunto Artístico Português" and "Conjunto Típico de Guitarras," and was part of the "Companheiros da Alegria" cast.

In addition to performing, Martinho was a prolific composer and a violin teacher, contributing significantly to the spread of the instrument. Towards the end of his life, he worked exclusively at "Faia" of Lucinda do Carmo and later became the private violin teacher of Carlos do Carmo. Martinho d'Assunção passed away on March 29, 1992, leaving behind a legacy as one of the finest guitarists in Fado music.
