Linhares Barbosa
João Linhares Barbosa (1893–1965) was a prominent Portuguese poet, renowned for his contributions to Fado, a traditional genre of Portuguese music. Born on July 15, 1893, in the Ajuda district of Lisbon, Barbosa lived there throughout his life. He was a self-taught poet who began publishing his verses at the age of 14 in the newspaper “A Voz do Operário.” His poetic work is estimated to encompass over 3,000 verses, earning him the title “Prince of Poets” within the Fado community.

Barbosa was deeply committed to the Fado genre, advocating for its preservation and the recognition of its performers. He founded the newspaper “Guitarra de Portugal” on his 29th birthday, July 15, 1922, which became a significant publication in the Fado-specialized press. Through this platform, he defended Fado and its artists against critics like Luiz Moita, who authored “O Fado, Canção de Vencidos.”

In addition to his literary work, Barbosa played a crucial role in elevating the status of Fado and its singers, contributing significantly to the cultural heritage of Portugal. He remained active in his endeavors until his death on August 19, 1965.
