Paul Mann
Paul Mann is a distinguished British conductor, recognized for his dynamic presence on the international music scene. Born on Tyneside, England, Mann was educated at Chetham’s School of Music and the University of York, where he studied piano under Denis Matthews. His early career included a position with the Northern Ballet Theatre and a conducting fellowship at the Royal Northern College of Music. He served as assistant conductor with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra from 1996 to 1998 and with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) from 1998, where he made his debut in June 1999.
Mann's career took a significant leap forward after winning the 1998 Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, which led to his appointment as assistant conductor of the LSO. He has since conducted numerous prestigious orchestras worldwide, including the Royal Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, St Petersburg Philharmonic, and the New Japan Philharmonic, among others. He has also established a regular guest conductorship with the New York City Ballet.
Notable highlights of Mann's career include conducting the Duke Ellington centenary concert with the LSO and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, featuring Wynton Marsalis, and collaborating with the rock band Deep Purple on Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra. This collaboration resulted in a successful live video and CD, followed by a global tour.
Mann has been particularly successful in his recordings, having worked with the English Chamber Orchestra and the LSO for labels such as Decca and Warner Classics. His tenure as chief conductor of the Odense Symphony Orchestra in Denmark was marked by critical acclaim, especially for his interpretations of Beethoven, Elgar, Mahler, Schumann, and Shostakovich.
Currently, Mann holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor at the Lviv National Philharmonic and continues to guest-conduct with major orchestras across Europe, the USA, Australia, and the Far East. His recent projects include the world premiere of Richard Flury's opera "A Florentine Tragedy" and ongoing recordings with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Liepāja Symphony Orchestra.
