Michael Kevin Daugherty, born on April 28, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a distinguished American composer, pianist, and teacher known for his contributions to contemporary classical music. He has received multiple Grammy Awards and is recognized as one of the ten most performed American composers of concert music. Daugherty's compositions often draw inspiration from popular culture, Romanticism, and Postmodernism, with notable works including the Metropolis Symphony, inspired by Superman comic books, and Tales of Hemingway for cello and orchestra.

Daugherty was raised in a musical family, with his father being a jazz and country drummer and his mother an amateur singer. His early exposure to music included teaching himself piano and participating in family jam sessions. He played in various bands during his high school years, including a rock, soul, and funk band called The Soul Company, where he was the leader, arranger, and organist.

Daugherty's compositions have been performed by major orchestras and have received critical acclaim. He is currently a Professor of Composition at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
