Beverly Ruby Ross
Beverly Ross (September 5, 1934 – January 15, 2022) was a pioneering American singer-songwriter born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in New Jersey. She began her songwriting career while still a student, contributing to high school musical productions and winning competitions. Ross gained early exposure when one of her songs was performed by Peggy Lee on national television.

In 1952, Ross moved back to New York City and began networking with songwriters at the Brill Building. She formed a successful partnership with Julius Dixson, co-writing the crossover hit "Dim, Dim the Lights (I Want Some Atmosphere)" for Bill Haley and His Comets in 1954. The song was notable for being the first rock and roll song recorded by a white singer to reach the R&B chart.

Ross and Dixson also co-wrote the 1958 hit "Lollipop," which she recorded as part of the interracial duo Ronald & Ruby. Despite the song's success, reaching No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, the duo faced challenges due to their racial composition, which led to canceled television appearances. The song was later covered by the Chordettes and the Mudlarks, achieving greater chart success.

As a staff songwriter at Hill & Range, Ross collaborated with notable songwriters of the era, including Jeff Barry and Aaron Schroeder. She co-wrote "Dixieland Rock" for Elvis Presley and penned other hits like "The Girl of My Best Friend," "Candy Man," and "Judy's Turn to Cry." Ross also had a brief recording career, performing as a solo artist and appearing on American Bandstand.

Despite her success, Ross became frustrated with the music industry's practices, particularly the theft of her work, and eventually left the business. She later recounted her experiences in her memoir, "I Was the First Woman Phil Spector Killed." Ross continued to divide her time between New York and Nashville, working on various entertainment projects. Her songs remain popular, frequently featured in films and television soundtracks.
