He was a founding member of the Tune Twisters, a swing jazz vocal trio that gained recognition in the mid-1930s. The group was initially composed of Andy Love, Robert Wacker, and Lathrop himself. The Tune Twisters were featured on radio broadcasts and collaborated with notable jazz artists such as Ray Noble, Bob Crosby, Glenn Miller, and Adrian Rollini. They also performed in the 1937 Broadway production "Between the Devil," where they sang "Triplets."

Lathrop's career included performances with Glenn Miller and Hal McIntyre. Around 1947, he became the leader of the Drug Store Cowboys. In addition to his performance career, Lathrop was a composer, co-writing the song "Helpless" with Marion Hutton. He passed away on January 9, 1987.
