Ludwig Herzer
Ludwig Herzer, born Ludwig Herzl on March 18, 1872, in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, was an Austrian physician and librettist. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and worked as a gynecologist. Alongside his medical career, Herzer gained recognition as a librettist, collaborating with noted figures such as Alfred Grünwald and Fritz Löhner. His works include operettas with music by composers like Edmund Eysler, Franz Lehár, and Robert Stolz. Some of his notable librettos are "Das Land des Lächelns," "Friederike," and "Schön ist die Welt." As a Jew, Herzer fled Austria following its annexation by Nazi Germany, reaching Switzerland in 1938. He passed away on April 17, 1939, in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
