Ed Rose
Ed Rose, born Edward Smackels Jr. on November 24, 1875, in Chicago, was a notable American lyricist who made significant contributions to early 20th-century music. He is best known for writing the lyrics to the song "Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!" composed by Abe Olman in 1917. In 1906, Rose co-founded the music publishing company Rose & Snyder Co. in Tin Pan Alley with George M. Krey and Ted Snyder. The company was incorporated in New York in 1908, but by 1909, Snyder had left to start his own firm. Rose's collaborations with composers like Ted Snyder and Thomas Lemonier resulted in numerous popular songs, including "There Must Be Somethin' the Matter with Me" and "The Man in the Moon Was Wise." His work was published by various music publishers, and he continued to write music into the 1920s. Ed Rose passed away on April 29, 1935, in Evanston, Illinois.
