Semmy Stahlhammer
Semmy Stahlhammer, born on March 5, 1954, is a distinguished Swedish violinist renowned for his extensive contributions to music both as a performer and educator. He served as the First Concertmaster at the Stockholm Royal Opera and was a Lecturer at the Stockholm Royal Music College for 25 years. Stahlhammer has performed globally, receiving critical acclaim across America, Asia, Australia, and Europe.
He has an impressive discography, appearing as a solo artist on 20 CDs. His anthology "Swedish Turn of the Century" was recognized as "Records of the year" by Dagens Nyheter, Sweden's largest newspaper. Semmy leads the "Stahlhammer Klezmer Classic Ensemble," a group founded by his grandfather in Poland around 1910.
Stahlhammer has been an Artist in Residence at the Banff Music Center in Canada and has conducted Master Classes at various prestigious institutions in the USA, including Kent State University and New York University. His educational background is illustrious, with degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music, Kent State University, and the Stockholm Royal Academy, and studies at Juilliard School, Yale University, and others.
His teachers included eminent musicians such as Isaac Stern and members of the Budapest, Guarneri, and Juilliard String Quartets. Semmy has received numerous grants and awards from various foundations and competitions, highlighting his excellence in music.
In addition to his performing career, Stahlhammer is a skilled restorer of string instruments, working on instruments by Stradivarius and Guarnerius in his Stockholm atelier. He holds three patents for his inventions related to music.
Semmy is also an author, having written "Codename Barber," a book about World War II, which has been translated into multiple languages. He co-authored "Sonja's Journey" with his mother, Sonja Stahlhammer, detailing her experiences during and after the war.
He continues to perform with the Stahlhammer Klezmer Classic Trio and co-founded "Bach in the Street," a production that combines various music genres and dance, winning the First Prize in the Jeunesses Musicales competition in 2018.
