Ray St. John
Raymond St. John, born on May 27, 1953, is an accomplished English songwriter, record producer, and guitarist known for his work in the music industry. He initially gained recognition as a member of the Latin soul band Ariva, which evolved into the funk band Pride, active from 1979 to 1982. Notably, Pride included Sade Adu, and St. John co-wrote the hit song "Smooth Operator" for her.
After leaving Pride in 1983, St. John took a hiatus before forming the band Halo James in 1988 with vocalist Christian James and keyboard player Neil Palmer. Halo James achieved significant success with their second single, "Could Have Told You So," which reached No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1990 and found success across Europe. Their album "The Witness" was critically acclaimed and sold over 100,000 copies, peaking at No. 18 on the UK Albums Chart.
Despite the initial success, Halo James disbanded in 1991. St. John continued his career as a songwriter and producer, writing hits for artists such as Snoop Dogg, Gabrielle, and Jason Donovan. His work has been featured in films, commercials, and TV shows. More recently, St. John has been involved in the country & western and Christian rock music scenes.
