Nicky Chinn
Nicky Chinn, born Nicholas Barry Chinn on May 16, 1945, in London, England, is a renowned English-American songwriter and record producer. He is best known for his prolific partnership with Mike Chapman, forming one of the most commercially successful songwriting duos of the 1970s glam rock era. Together, they crafted a series of hit singles for artists such as The Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Mud, and Smokie, among others.
Chinn's journey into music began in 1970 when he co-wrote songs for the film "There's a Girl in My Soup" with Mike d'Abo. He soon met Australian-born Mike Chapman, and the two teamed up under Mickie Most's RAK label. Their collaboration with The Sweet produced a string of hits, including "Co-Co," "Little Willy," "Blockbuster!" and "Ballroom Blitz," which became international successes.
Beyond The Sweet, Chinn and Chapman wrote chart-topping songs for Suzi Quatro, such as "Can the Can" and "Devil Gate Drive," and for Mud, including "Tiger Feet" and "Lonely This Christmas." They also achieved success in the United States with Exile's "Kiss You All Over" and Toni Basil's "Mickey."
Despite their split in 1983, Chinn's influence endured, having co-written over fifty Top 40 hits. He faced health challenges in the late 1980s and 1990s but returned to music in 2004. Chinn's contributions to music have been recognized with three Ivor Novello Awards, including the Jimmy Kennedy award for outstanding career achievement in 1997.
