Born in 1962 in Kiev, Ukraine (then part of the USSR), Alexander Korolev, also known as Sacha, is a distinguished Ukrainian pianist and music pedagogue. He began his musical journey at a local music school in his hometown, where his talent was nurtured by skilled teachers. From a young age, Korolev demonstrated remarkable ability, mastering complex piano pieces and winning numerous Ukrainian competitions, including those featuring his own compositions.
At the age of 15, Korolev commenced his formal studies at the State Music School in Moscow, under the tutelage of Vera Horoschina, a student of the eminent pianist Heinrich Neuhaus. He graduated in 1981 with a diploma in four disciplines: piano teaching, chamber music, accompaniment, and solo performance. That same year, he began further studies at the Gnessins Institute in Moscow, where he earned a diploma in composition and musicology in 1986, focusing on music theory, solfeggio, harmony, polyphony, musical form analysis, and music history.
Korolev launched his career as a solo concert pianist in 1992 with a celebrated performance of J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 at the Rachmaninov Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. This performance established his reputation as an expert interpreter of German-speaking composers, particularly from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras. His career includes radio performances and the release of recordings such as the Well-Tempered Clavier, Volume I, Bach's Goldberg Variations, preludes by Bach-Busoni, and piano pieces by Johannes Brahms.
In addition to his performance career, Korolev has been a dedicated music educator, teaching at institutions such as the Chopin School of Music, the School after Scriabin, and School № 67 in Moscow. He also served as a coach at the State Music College Alfred Schnittke and worked with the music agency Mosconcert. Known for his innovative teaching methods, Korolev emphasizes high standards and has cultivated numerous successful musicians and music teachers, many of whom have achieved international acclaim.
