Robert Yount
Robert Gene Yount (October 20, 1929 – June 30, 2005) was an influential American musician, singer, and songwriter in the country music genre, known primarily for co-writing the song "Release Me" with Eddie Miller. Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Yount's career as a guitarist and songwriter flourished between 1949 and 1954 when he collaborated with Miller. The song "Release Me" gained significant acclaim, notably reaching number 1 in the UK in a cover by Engelbert Humperdinck. Yount was sometimes known by the stage name Bobby Gene. In 1958, he signed away his royalty rights to W.S. Stevenson, leading to a complex legal battle over royalties that lasted decades. Despite these challenges, Yount's contributions to country music were recognized, and he was a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He passed away in Oroville, California, at the age of 75.
