Sir Douglas Quintet
The Sir Douglas Quintet emerged from San Antonio, Texas, in the mid-1960s, blending a variety of musical styles including rhythm-and-blues, country, rock-and-roll, pop, and conjunto to create a unique sound known as the "West Side Sound." Founded by Douglas Wayne Sahm, the band capitalized on the British Invasion craze with their hit "She's About a Mover." The group originally consisted of Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, Frank Morin, Jack Barber, and Johnny Perez. Their music was influenced by the diverse cultural environment of San Antonio, which allowed for a rich cross-pollination of musical styles. The band recorded five albums between 1964 and 1972, achieving international popularity during this period. Although Doug Sahm continued to release music under the Sir Douglas Quintet name in the 1980s and 1990s, the band did not replicate the domestic success of their earlier years.
