Harvey Schmidt
Harvey Lester Schmidt, born on September 12, 1929, in Dallas, Texas, was an influential American composer for musical theatre and an accomplished illustrator. He is best known for composing the music for "The Fantasticks," the longest-running musical in history, which enjoyed a remarkable 42-year run off-Broadway from 1960 to 2002. Schmidt's collaboration with lyricist Tom Jones began during their time at the University of Texas, where Schmidt initially studied art. Their partnership led to a series of successful musicals, including "110 in the Shade" and "I Do! I Do!," both of which earned Tony Award nominations for Best Composer and Lyricist.
In addition to his work in theatre, Schmidt was a talented graphic artist, contributing illustrations to prominent publications such as Life, Harper's Bazaar, and Sports Illustrated. His contributions to musical theatre were recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the American Theatre Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Schmidt passed away on February 28, 2018, in Tomball, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of timeless music and artistic achievement.
