Reggie Lucas
Reginald Grant Lucas, known as Reggie Lucas, was an influential American guitarist, songwriter, and record producer born on February 25, 1953, in New York City. He passed away on May 19, 2018, in New York City due to heart disease. Lucas began his music career as a guitarist in the 1970s, performing with notable artists such as Billy Paul, Miles Davis, and Roberta Flack. His work with Miles Davis' electric band from 1972 to 1976 was particularly significant, where he played rhythm guitar alongside musicians like Pete Cosey and Michael Henderson.

Lucas's collaboration with percussionist James Mtume led to a successful songwriting and production partnership. Together, they wrote and produced hits for artists including Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman, Lou Rawls, The Spinners, and Roberta Flack. Their composition "Never Knew Love Like This Before," performed by Stephanie Mills, won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1981.

In the late 1970s, Lucas ventured into solo projects and gained prominence for producing the majority of Madonna's 1983 self-titled debut album, which included the hit song "Borderline." The album sold over five million copies, establishing Lucas as a sought-after producer. He also worked with artists such as Rebbie Jackson, Randy Crawford, and The Four Tops.

In 1986, Lucas founded the Quantum Sound recording studio in Jersey City, which hosted notable clients like the Pet Shop Boys, Jodeci, and Jeff Buckley. Despite suffering a heart attack in 1991, Lucas continued to contribute to the music industry, earning numerous awards and recognition, including the SESAC Legacy Award in 2018.

Lucas was a longtime resident of Montclair, New Jersey. His daughter, Lisa Lucas, served as the executive director of the National Book Foundation and is now the publisher of Pantheon and Schocken Books. His son, Julian, is a staff writer for The New Yorker. Reggie Lucas's legacy endures through his significant contributions to jazz, soul, disco, R&B, and pop music.
