Erick Morillo
Erick Morillo (March 26, 1971 – September 1, 2020) was a prominent Colombian-American DJ, music producer, and record label owner, renowned for his significant contributions to the house music genre. Born in New York City, he spent his early years in Cartagena, Colombia, before moving back to the United States at age 11. Morillo began DJing at a young age, influenced by salsa, merengue, reggae, and hip-hop, and later attended Emerson High School in Union City, New Jersey.
Morillo's career took off with the 1993 hit "I Like to Move It," produced under the pseudonym Reel 2 Real, which became a global sensation and was featured in various commercials and films. He collaborated with Latin reggae star El General on the platinum single "Muevelo" in 1991. In 1997, he co-founded Subliminal Records, a label that became synonymous with the evolution of house music and helped launch the careers of several artists.
Throughout his career, Morillo received numerous accolades, including three DJ Awards for "Best House DJ" and three for "Best International DJ." His live performances were legendary, captivating audiences from Ibiza to Miami with his unique blend of deep house and tribal beats.
Despite his professional success, Morillo faced personal challenges, including sexual assault accusations shortly before his death. He passed away from a drug overdose at his home in Miami Beach, Florida, just days before a scheduled court appearance.
Morillo was married to British model Yasmin Sait-Armstrong Morillo in 2012. At the time of his death, his net worth was estimated at $9 million.
