Emmans
Edward Leslie (Les) Emmans, born in Norwich, England, in 1929, was a classical music composer who significantly contributed to music education and composition in the UK. Educated at Kings Lynn Grammar School, Norwich City College, Wolverhampton WTTC, the University of Nottingham, and The Open University, Emmans studied music privately with several teachers, including Alan Bush. Initially employed as an electricity power distribution engineer by Eastern Electricity after his National Service in the RAF, he later transitioned to a career in education as a college lecturer. At Wilmorton College (now Derby College), he was responsible for developing music courses and facilities.
Emmans retired early to focus on composing, writing, and journalistic activities. He served as the editor of Composer News, the journal of the Composers' Guild of Great Britain, and the SMA Bulletin, the journal of the Schools' Music Association of Great Britain. He was also a conductor of numerous choirs and music groups and founded the Derby Opera Workshop. Additionally, he was the founder chairman of the Central Composers' Alliance and the East Midlands Region of the Schools Music Association.
A church organist, accompanist, and double bass player, Emmans also worked as a part-time WEA tutor in local studies and the arts. His compositions include works such as "A Ride in the Dales," "Dovedale," "Ripley Market," and "Buxton Festival," all dated February 1, 2011.
