A. P Carter
Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter, known as A. P. Carter, was a seminal figure in the development of country music, born on December 15, 1891, in Maces Spring, Virginia. He was the eldest of eight children in a family deeply rooted in the musical traditions of the Appalachian region. Despite suffering from a tremor attributed to a near lightning strike before his birth, Carter developed a passion for music, learning to play instruments like the fiddle and guitar.

In 1915, Carter married Sara Dougherty, and together with Sara's cousin Maybelle, they formed the Carter Family in 1927. This group became one of the most influential acts in country music history, recording nearly 300 songs. A. P. Carter was a prolific song collector and arranger, often traveling through the Appalachian region with his friend Lesley Riddle to gather material. His efforts contributed significantly to the group's repertoire, which included classics like "Keep on the Sunny Side" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

The Carter Family first recorded at the historic Bristol Sessions in 1927, a pivotal event in country music's commercial emergence. Despite personal challenges, including his divorce from Sara in 1936, Carter's musical legacy endured. He briefly reunited with Sara in the 1950s to perform with their children. A. P. Carter passed away on November 7, 1960, in Kingsport, Tennessee, leaving behind a profound impact on American music. He was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970 and the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2001.
