Tony Macaulay, born Anthony Gordon Instone on April 21, 1944, in Fulham, London, England, is a renowned English songwriter, composer, and author. He gained prominence in the British pop music scene during the 1960s and 1970s, crafting numerous hits that resonated on both sides of the Atlantic. Macaulay is celebrated for his work with The Foundations, co-writing the chart-topping "Baby Now That I've Found You" and "Build Me Up Buttercup." His songwriting prowess earned him nine Ivor Novello Awards and twice the title of 'Songwriter of the Year' by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

Macaulay's collaborations with artists and groups like Edison Lighthouse, David Soul, and The 5th Dimension produced iconic tracks such as "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" and "(Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All." His music has been recorded by a diverse array of artists, including Elvis Presley, Donna Summer, and Tom Jones. In addition to pop success, Macaulay ventured into musical theatre, contributing to productions like "Windy City," which won the Evening Standard Drama Award.

In 2007, he became the first British recipient of the Edwin Forrest Award for his contributions to American theatre.
