Ma Rainey
Ma Rainey, born Gertrude Pridgett in Georgia in 1886, is celebrated as the "Mother of Blues." Her influence on the blues genre is profound, having mentored other notable artists such as Bessie Smith. Rainey began her singing career at the age of 14 as part of a vaudeville troupe, even before the blues were formally recognized as a genre. Her powerful, low voice, complemented by a backing band, helped her rise to stardom. She signed with Paramount Records, through which she recorded over 100 songs, solidifying her legacy in the music world. Some of her popular songs include "Prove It on Me Blues," "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," and "See See Rider Blues." Rainey passed away in 1939, leaving behind a lasting impact on the blues and music history.
