Norman Gimbel
Norman Gimbel (November 16, 1927 – December 19, 2018) was an acclaimed American lyricist and songwriter known for his significant contributions to popular music and film. Born in Brooklyn, New York City, to Jewish immigrant parents from Austria, he pursued studies in English at Baruch College and Columbia University. Gimbel's career began with music publisher David Blum and evolved as he became a contract songwriter with Edwin H. Morris Music. He gained early success with novelty songs such as "Tennessee Wig Walk" and "A Whale of a Tale."

Gimbel's work included writing English lyrics for international hits like "Sway" and "The Girl from Ipanema." He collaborated with composer Charles Fox on several songs, including "Ready to Take a Chance Again," and co-wrote the classic "Killing Me Softly With His Song." His film and television work earned him five nominations for Academy Awards or Golden Globe Awards, with "It Goes Like It Goes" from the film Norma Rae winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1979. In recognition of his contributions to music, Gimbel was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984.

Throughout his career, Gimbel also ventured into Broadway, writing lyrics for musicals such as "Whoop-Up" and "The Conquering Hero." He was married twice, to Elinor Rowley and Victoria Carver, and had four children. Gimbel passed away in Montecito, California, at the age of 91.
