Oscar Brown Jr.
Oscar Brown Jr. (October 10, 1926 – May 29, 2005) was an American singer, songwriter, playwright, poet, civil rights activist, and actor. He was a prolific artist, having written 125 published songs, 12 albums, and more than a dozen musical plays. In addition to his artistic career, Brown was also involved in politics, running unsuccessfully for office in both the Illinois state legislature and the U.S. Congress. Some of his popular songs include "Work Song," "Signifyin’ Monkey," and "The Snake." His notable albums include "Fresh" (1974), "Mr. Oscar Brown Jr. Goes to Washington" (1965), and "Tells It Like It Is!" (1963).
