Phil Boutelje (August 6, 1895 – July 29, 1979) was a notable American pianist, songwriter, composer, author, and conductor. Born in Philadelphia, he received his musical education at the Philadelphia Music Academy. During World War I, Boutelje served as a military bandmaster. After the war, he played piano for jazz groups and became a pianist and arranger for Paul Whiteman's orchestra. His career in Hollywood saw him become the music director for Paramount Pictures and United Artists, where he composed numerous film scores, often uncredited. He was nominated for two Academy Awards for his work on "The Great Victor Herbert" (1939) and "Hi Diddle Diddle" (1943). Boutelje was a member of ASCAP from 1930, collaborating with lyricists like Ned Washington and Al Dubin. His song compositions include "China Boy" and "Lonesome." In his later years, he married actress Babe London, and they lived at the Motion Picture Country Home in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, where he passed away in 1979.
