His recordings of Monteverdi's Vespro and Orfeo in the mid-1960s marked the start of his international career. Bach's Passions and Mass in B minor, Mozart's Requiem and Mass in C minor, and Requiems by Brahms, Fauré, Duruflé, and Verdi. He also explored Italian and French opera from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
