William B. Sandys
William Sandys (1792 – 18 February 1874) was an English solicitor and antiquarian, renowned for his contributions to the revival of Christmas carols in the 19th century. Educated at Westminster, Sandys practiced law from 1814 until 1873. He was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a member of the Percy Society.

Sandys is best remembered for his publication "Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern" in 1833, which included 80 carols, marking the first appearance of many now-classic English carols such as "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen" and "The First Noel." This work contributed significantly to the mid-Victorian revival of Christmas traditions. His collection was divided into three parts, featuring ancient carols, carols from the West of England, and French provincial carols.

In 1852, Sandys published another influential work, "Christmas-tide, Its History, Festivities and Carols, With Their Music," aimed at a broader audience. Besides his carol collections, Sandys collaborated with Simon Andrew Forster on "The History of the Violin and other Instruments Played on with the Bow" in 1864.

Sandys' efforts, alongside the works of contemporaries like Charles Dickens, played a crucial role in redefining and popularizing Christmas celebrations in England. He passed away in London on February 18, 1874.
