Marko Munih
Marko Munih was a Slovenian conductor, born on January 9, 1936, in Most na Soči. He passed away on July 20, 2024, in Šempeter pri Gorici. Munih studied conducting at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana under Danilo Švara and graduated in 1961. He further honed his skills with maestro Lovro Matačić in Frankfurt. His career began as a répétiteur at the Slovenian Philharmonic, where he conducted the orchestra from 1963 to 1971. He succeeded Anton Nanut as the choir director of the Primorski Academic Choir Vinko Vodopivec. From 1965 to 1975, he was the artistic director and conductor of the Academic Choir Tone Tomšič, leading them on tours across Europe and North America.
Munih received several prestigious awards, including the student Prešeren Award in 1960 for conducting Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, the Prešeren Fund Award in 1969 for his artistic leadership of the APZ Tone Tomšič, the Betetto Award for creativity in 1983, and another Prešeren Fund Award in 1985 for performing Slovenian works with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra. He served as the artistic director and conductor of the Chamber Choir RTV Slovenia (then RTV Ljubljana) from 1971 to 1979. In March 2006, he took over the artistic direction of the Goriški Octet "Vrtnica." In May 2011, he was named an honorary citizen of the Municipality of Tolmin.
His mother, Karolina Dragica Makarovič, was a cousin of Slovenian composer Vinko Vodopivec, and his father, Zdravko Munih, was a noted amateur choir director.
