Vladimir Altschuler
An acclaimed conductor from Russia, Vladimir Altschuler is the Honored Artist of Russia and the chief conductor of the Saint Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra.
Career highlights:
He joined the Saint Petersburg orchestra (then the Leningrad Conservatory) as a violist in 1969 and served as the viola section leader in 1982.
He made his debut as a conductor with the orchestra in 1984.
He has held the title of conductor for the Academic Symphony Orchestra since 1994, working with composers from Bach to Shostakovich.
He has conducted the Russian premieres of several major works, including Anton Bruckner's complete cycle of nine symphonies and Michael Tippett's oratorio, A Child of Our Time.
His repertoire also includes works by 20th-century composers, such as Benjamin Britten, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Witold Lutosławski.
He has a wide-ranging repertoire, having also performed film scores by Shostakovich and waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss.
In May 2024, he was appointed the new principal guest conductor of the Vladimir Governor's Symphony Orchestra.
