Vladislav Tshernushenko
ladislav Chernushenko is a prominent Soviet and Russian conductor, choirmaster, and music teacher. He is best known for his long tenure leading the Saint Petersburg State Academic Capella, one of Russia's oldest musical institutions.
Career highlights
Early life and education: Born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) on January 14, 1936, Chernushenko received his musical training at the Choir School of the State Capella and later at the Leningrad Conservatory.
Conductor: In 1974, he became the principal conductor and artistic director of the Saint Petersburg State Academic Capella (at the time, the Leningrad Glinka State Academic Choir).
Conservatory rector: From 1979 to 2002, he served as the rector of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory.
Revival of Russian sacred music: Chernushenko is credited with reviving and bringing forbidden or little-known Russian sacred music back into concert life in Russia. In 1981, he initiated the "Nevsky Choral Assemblies" festival.
Awards and recognition: For his contributions to music, he was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1991 and received the State Prize of Russia in 1994.
