Saulius Sondeckis
Saulius Sondeckis (11 October 1928 – 3 February 2016) was a distinguished Lithuanian violinist, conductor, orchestra leader, and professor. Born in Šiauliai, Lithuania, he graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre as a violinist in 1952 and studied conducting with Igor Markevich. Sondeckis began his conducting career in 1955 with the Student Orchestra of the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Art. In 1960, he founded the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and served as its artistic director and principal conductor until 2004. He also led the St. Petersburg State Hermitage Orchestra from 1989 and the Lithuanian Baltic Chamber Orchestra from 2005. Sondeckis was a prominent figure in contemporary classical music in Lithuania, receiving numerous accolades, including People's Artist of the USSR, a Laureate of the USSR State Award, and the Lithuania National Award. He was involved in major international competitions and was a member of the Herbert von Karajan Foundation. In recognition of his contributions, the Šiauliai Conservatory was renamed in his honor. Saulius Sondeckis passed away in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2016.
