Alexander Kniazev
Alexander Alexandrovitch Kniazev, born on April 26, 1961, in Moscow, is a distinguished Russian cellist and organist. He began his cello studies at the age of six under the tutelage of Alexander Fedorchenko and later graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1986. Kniazev furthered his musical education with organ studies under Galina Kozlova, graduating from the Nizhny-Novgorod Conservatory in 1991.
Kniazev has achieved significant acclaim in the classical music world, winning numerous prestigious competitions. These include first prizes at the National Cello Competition in Vilnius (1977), the International Cello Competition in Cassado (1979), the Chamber Music Competition in Trapani (1987), and the UNISA International Competition in Pretoria (1992). He also received the third prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1990). In recognition of his contributions to music, he was named the best musician of the year in Russia in 1999.
His career as a performer has seen him collaborate with renowned conductors such as Yuri Bashmet, Charles Dutoit, and Mstislav Rostropovich, and perform with prestigious orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, and the Orchestre National de France. Kniazev has also been a prominent figure in chamber music, partnering with notable musicians like Vadim Repin, Nikolai Lugansky, and Boris Berezovsky.
In addition to his performance career, Kniazev is dedicated to education, teaching at the Moscow Conservatory and conducting master classes across Europe and Asia. His extensive discography includes acclaimed recordings such as the complete Bach Cello Suites, released on Warner Classics in 2004.
