Anne Shelton
Anne Shelton, OBE, born Patricia Jacqueline Sibley on November 10, 1923, in Dulwich, London, England, was a celebrated English singer known for her inspirational performances for soldiers during World War II. She gained fame as the original British singer of "Lili Marlene" and became known as the "Forces' Favourite," second only to Vera Lynn, the "Forces' Sweetheart." Shelton's career began early; she was singing on the radio by age twelve and secured a recording contract at fifteen.

In 1940, Shelton was discovered by bandleader Bert Ambrose and began performing with his orchestra. Her popularity soared during the war, with her radio program "Calling Malta" serving as a vital morale booster for troops. Although invited by Glenn Miller to perform in France, she declined due to prior commitments, a decision that inadvertently spared her from the tragic fate of Miller's ill-fated flight.

Shelton's post-war career included several hits on the UK Singles Chart, including a number one with "Lay Down Your Arms" in 1956. She also ventured into television, starring in "The Anne Shelton Show" and "Ask Anne," and participated in the Eurovision Song Contest selection process.

In recognition of her contributions to entertainment and charity, Shelton was awarded the OBE in 1990 for her work with the "Not Forgotten Association," supporting disabled former service personnel. Anne Shelton passed away on July 31, 1994, in Herstmonceux, Sussex, leaving behind a legacy as a cherished wartime vocalist and beloved performer.
