Lowell Mason
Lowell Mason (January 8, 1792 – August 11, 1872) was an influential American music director and banker, renowned for his contributions to 19th-century American church music. He composed over 1,600 hymn tunes, with some of his most famous works including an arrangement of "Joy to the World" and the tune Bethany, which is used for the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee." Mason also set music to "Mary Had A Little Lamb." He played a pivotal role in introducing music education into American public schools and is recognized as the first significant U.S. music educator. However, he has faced criticism for contributing to the decline of the participatory sacred music tradition that was prevalent in North America before his era.

Mason was born in Medfield, Massachusetts, where he began his musical career as the music director of the First Parish Church at the age of 17. His birthplace was preserved from development in 2011 and relocated to a town park on Green Street.
