Billy Hayes, born on August 7, 1985, in Miami, Florida, is an American musician known for his contributions to the noise rock, garage punk, psychedelic pop, and hardcore punk genres. He began his musical career in the Memphis hardcore punk band, That Was Then, and later played in psychedelic pop bands such as MÜTZ, the Barbaras, and the Boston Chinks, all based in Memphis, Tennessee.
Hayes gained prominence as the drummer and back-up vocalist for Jay Reatard's band from 2005 to 2009, contributing to the Matador Singles Collection, Watch Me Fall, and a split 7-inch with Sonic Youth. In October 2009, he and bandmate Stephen Pope left Reatard's band and joined Wavves. During his tenure with Wavves, Hayes played drums, sang back-up vocals, and wrote two songs for their third album, King of the Beach: "Convertible Balloon" and "Baby Say Goodbye." He departed from Wavves in November 2010.
After leaving Wavves, Hayes formed a new band, Cretin Stompers, with Alex Gates, a guitarist for Wavves, and BIG MUFF, a musician/producer based in Brooklyn, New York. Their debut LP, "Looking Forward to Being Attacked," was released in the spring of 2014 on HoZac Records. Throughout his career, Hayes has been associated with record labels such as Fat Possum, Goner Records, HoZac Records, and Best of Times Records.
