Rare Silk
Rare Silk was an American vocal jazz group formed in Boulder, Colorado, in 1978. Initially a female trio consisting of sisters Gaile and MaryLynn Gillaspie and Marguerite Juenemann, the group was known for their modern harmonic sound and imaginative arrangements. Influenced by the vocal styles of the Boswell Sisters and the Andrews Sisters, they began their career by performing on a local radio station and in area clubs, often dressed in vintage attire.

The group gained significant attention in 1980 when they opened for Benny Goodman at the Playboy Jazz Festival and subsequently joined him on tour, performing at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, as well as the Aurex Jazz Festival in Japan.

In 1983, Rare Silk released their debut album, "New Weave," which featured contributions from notable jazz musicians like Michael and Randy Brecker. The album was a commercial success, reaching #2 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart and earning two Grammy nominations. Their subsequent albums, "American Eyes" (1985) and "Black and Blue" (1986), continued to showcase their unique blend of vocal jazz and swing.

Throughout their career, Rare Silk experienced lineup changes, with Juenemann being replaced by Barbara Reeves and later Jamie Broumas. The group disbanded in 1988 after a decade of innovative contributions to the jazz vocal scene.
