Jack Norworth
Jack Norworth was a Tin Pan Alley songwriter best known for co-writing the classic song "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" in 1908 with Albert Von Tilzer. Remarkably, neither Norworth nor Von Tilzer had attended a baseball game prior to composing the song. The inspiration for the song struck Norworth while he was on a subway train and saw a sign advertising a baseball game at the Polo Grounds. The song's original lyrics narrate the story of a woman named Katie, who prefers a baseball game over a traditional date at a show. The first performance of the song was by Norworth's wife, Nora Bayes, a popular vaudeville singer, which helped in popularizing it. Despite its early popularity, the song was not played at a baseball game until 1934, when it was featured during a high-school game in Los Angeles and later at the 1934 World Series.
